Everyone has heard the word meditation before. Some practice it, some don't believe in it, but yet the outstanding research behind it's impact is REAL. Each person meditates for their own reasons but no matter your intention for meditating, there are benefits to be had. So with all the different types of meditations today, let's go over some that most of you may be familiar with. Let's also dive into some simple steps on how to meditate as well.
“Each person meditates for their own reasons but no matter your intention for meditating, there are benefits to be had.”
There are different types of meditation. I have always broken it down into 9 different types as it was how I was taught and learned. However, there are many additional types that I do not mention below. The 9 types are:
Focused meditation.
Progressive Relaxation mediation.
Love and Kindness meditation.
Visualization mediation.
Mantra mediation.
Spiritual mediation.
Movement meditation.
Mindfulness meditation.
Transcendental meditation.
Now that you know of different types of meditation, the next question is, how do I meditate? Everyone has their own way of meditating, so let us go over some general steps you can take to simplify it. Meditation to me has always sounded simpler than what it actually is. Most of us know that silencing your brain, and focusing on the present moment is easier said than done.
Most important, is to set your intention for your meditation. What do you want to accomplish during your meditation.
Set a time limit for your meditation.
Find a comfortable quiet place that you will not be distracted or disturbed.
If possible, sit upright, legs crossed without any back support.
Close your eyes and focus your attention on your breathing.
Pay attention to your body during your meditation. If anything feels uncomfortable, change it.
If your mind starts to wonder, there are a few things you can do, write it down to release it from your mind, or bring your focus back to your breathing. Always remember that there is no wrong way of meditating. Each experience is your own while you are meditating.
Close your meditation with kindness. Thanking yourself and your body for this time.
When finished, open your eyes and get up slowly. Let your body come back to the present now.
“Most important, is to set your intention for your meditation. What do you want to accomplish during your meditation.”
Now to the big question. Why am I going to spend the little time I have to meditate? You got things to do? Meditating is recommended for many different reasons that are beneficial in both your emotional health and your physical one too. There are those that meditate for stress, those that meditate to get better sleep, those that do it for deeper connection, those that do it for self understanding, and those that do it for self healing. Meditation has been known to improve concentration, sleep, creativity, happiness, focus and productivity. On the opposite end, reduce anxiety, depression and pain. There are many studies that have been published of even greater reasons of why to meditate due to the benefits to your body. Self healing is real.
There is a balance between your mind, your body and your spirit when you meditate. Depending on your belief or religion, spirit may change to any other term. No matter your belief, there is a deeper connection with self that happens that makes you question many things in this physical life we see around us. You come to a deeper understanding of energies, connections and what is of greater importance. As I like to tell everyone, meditating is FREE. Why not give it a try, an actual chance so you can see the benefits it can do you for you and you can see it for yourself. Start with a simple 5 minute daily guided meditation. You will want to increase the time after that as time progresses and you start seeing the benefits of those 5 minute meditations.
As always, sending positive vibes your way 🙏
